Evil of Strong Drink

"Woe unto them that nre mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink." (Isaiah 6:22.)

Woe means calamity, distress, sorrow and trouble, and we certainly have all of these things today. The manufacture and sale of intoxicating liquor has always been a curse to our country, and matters get worse as time goes on. Think of the crimes that are cause l by this great evil, the murders, the deaths by accident caused by drunken drivers, the filled jails and prisons, the broken hearts and the broken-up homes. I know whereof I speak, for my own heart was broken, yes, twice broken, and my home was wrecked on account of this evil. When I speak for myself, I speak for many more broken-hearted wives and mothers in our land today. When the good temperance people, by their efforts, their votes, and their prayers, brought prohibition to pass they did the right thing. However, this sure made Satan mad, (he has not a better agent in all the world than the liquor business), and he marshalled his forces (all of the law breaking men and uomen belong to him ) and put over moonshining and bootlegging on a big scale. But if God could only have had control of all men in authority, then things could never have gained the ground they did. There were so many backboneless, rum-loving men in office, who would not enforce the law that many good honest people voted for repeal in order to better conditions. But have they bettered conditions? Then there have been others who voted for repeal because thev believed the political promises of better times. If we have to have a revenue on something that will be a curse to OUR people, in order to have money in OUR treasuries, I say let us die paupers. I do not vote for any man who favors the liquor business and never will. I did not vote for repeal, for God's law cannot be repealed, and God's law says, 'Be not deceived: God is not mocked, for whatsoever a man soweth; that shall he also reap." (Gal. 6:7). And it is an evident fact that America has sown liquor, and she is reaping drunkards by the millions and as a result of drunkards, disasters and all kinds of trouhle. God's law says, "Be not drunk with wine wherein is excess, but be filled with the Spirit." (Eph. 5:18.)

God's Word says, "Woe unto him that giveth his neighbor drink, that putteth thy bottle to him and maketh him drunken also." (Hab 2:15.) And this applies to every dealer in intoxicating liquors and every one that votes for it to be manufactured and sold.

God's Word says, "Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise." (Prov. 20:1.) God's Word savs, "No drunkard shall inherit the Kingdom of God." (I Cor. 6:10.) God's Word says, "Look not on the wine when it is red, when it giveth color in the glass, wllell it moveth itself aright. At last it biteth like the selpent and stingeth like an addel.'' True, and surely this ser pent of drink has sunk its fangs into our American civilization. I think if we would take the word "wine" as it is in the Bible, and in its stead use the word "beer," we would have it just about right. It would read like this, "Look not on the beer when it foams, when it giveth its color in the glass, when it moveth itself aright; for at last it biteth like a serpent and stingeth like an adder." I don't see why folks think beer is harmless or does not make one drunk, for I know folks who stay drunk on it right in our own town. There is another thing thing that is hard for me to understand. Ever since I can remember, the red lights have been the stop lights; along the highways where men are working at night they leave red lanterns; and when folks see these lights they stop. On the back of cars they have red lights, and folks will not drive into these cars; when thev get just so close they slow up and stop. I believe the most dangerous place that you see the red lights is before the beer saloon, and what I do not understand is, that folks disregard the danger and walk right in, placing their heads in the devil's halter to he led to destruction; in both soul and body. 'The most nauseating thing that I have seen (and I live near a beer saloon) is women sitting at the bar drinking with men, yes, drunken themselves. Oh, womanhood of America, where are you headed? Don't you know that God intends for women to keep up the standards of decency? And when our women so lower themselves as to drink and smoke cigarettes and play cards in an open saloon, or anywhele else as to that matter, we are headed for the rocks which means destruction. It is an evident fact that Satan and his forces own and control the liquor business, for God's Word says, "If any man have not the Spirit of Christ he is none of His." God's Holy Spirit will not abide with folks who are defiled by strong drink and its attending evils. Yes, drink is doing more harm today than it did in old saloon days, for Satan has it so dressed up now that more folks are deceived by it; and oh, how the folks, men and women, boys and girls, who are deceived and bound by this curse of drink, need to seek God, to repent of their sins and let Christ make them free, for whom Christ makes free is free indeed! This is the only hope for America today; it is the only hope for individuals. It will have to be old-fashioned, soul-saving, blood-cleansing revival of the religion of the Lord Jesus Christ, or a revo]ution sooner or later. God is still on the throne, ready and anxious to hear and answer the prayers of His peoplc and He will avenge His people; those who have tried to have a better, mole sober nation in which to live. Yes, He will avenge them on evely liquor dealing man and woman, and don't you forget it. Many of them have already met the judgments of God. Oh, people of God! let us go to prayer, to try to save our young people and the cause of righteousness.

I say to you that this curse of drink is destloying more of our men and women than the World War did. Yes, and destroying them soul and body. Not only our men and boys, but poor ignorant women and girls as well. May God help and deliver us from this awful curse that is blighting our morals, breaking our hearts, wrecking our homes and destroyiny souls by the millions, is my prayer, in Jesus' name.

What causes the troubles of earth today,

The heartaches, the pain, and the woe,

The mischiefs, the murders, and the crimes,

And folks into prison go?

What demoralizes folks until no more,

Honorable citizens they be?

You ask what I mean‹I surely can tell‹

It is BOOZE.

Oh, but you say, "I tell no one to drink, And my influence does not count."

But listen! Your influence is going out‹

And to God you must give account.

The example you set before that boy,

That will cause him his soul to lose:

He'll reproach you on God's judgment day,

O, please! Won't you give up your booze?

Our foreparents kept it by the barrel, you say Yes, their iniquities are visited on us,

That is why those not bound by the curse,

Have to live in the fuss.

The Bilbe says, "Touch not, taste not."

That which will cause you to perish, to use;

And folks know the cost, they surely are lost,

Yet will not give up their booze.

What laid that mother so low in the grave?

She sank with a broken heart.

It separates the dearest of friends.

Why not w ith the cause let us part?

Yes, dearest friends, who are heart to heart,

All Iove for each other they lose,

lt separates them, yes, miles apart:

If one's temperate, the other for booze.

The Book says no drunkard inherits heaven.

And it's woe to them who drink.

As the Bible is our only safe guide,

Is it not time to think?

To enter heaven, you must be clean,

Or your precious soul you lose;

And as no drunkard shall enter there,

Oh! will you not give up your booze?
