At The Gates Of Day

Bro. Busbee

Each day is an extension of the mercy and forbearance of our heavenly Father. "This day was lent you of the Lord, each precious hour He gives, each moment is a trust from Him." Ross Minkler in the song, Youıre Not Your Own.

Hosea 6:3 says of the Lord that, "His going forth is prepared as the morning." Isaiah 50:4 says that "He wakeneth morning by morning." Lam. 3:22-23 says, "It is of the Lordıs mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness." Psalm 68:19 says, "Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation." The Hebrew rendering for this is so good and more plainly expressed: "Blessed is the Lord, day by day He bears burdens for us, the God of our salvation." Is it not precious how God works for us day by day? In Matthew 28:20, when it said that Jesus said, "Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world," the Greek says, "I am with you all the days until the completion of the age."

God deals with us one day at a time. There will be times when He can and will give us premonition and foreknowledge of something up ahead. But concerning His grace and blessings promised, they come day by day. Psalms 19:1-2 mention that the heavens declare the glory of God day after day. Jesus said in Matt. 6:11 to pray, "Give us this day our daily bread." He expressed it in Luke 11:3, "Give us day by day our daily bread." Jesus said further in Matt. 6:34, "Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof." We have a wonderful promise coming to us from ancient times in Deut. 33:25 which says, "As thy days, so shall thy strength be."

Paul said in II Cor. 4:16 that "though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day." The blessings and inspiration and renewing of the Holy Spirit comes on a daily basis. We do not need tomorrowıs blessings today. We cannot fight tomorrowıs battles today. We are not promised tomorrowıs needs today. It all comes on a daily basis. The Lord enjoins us in Luke 9:23 to take up our cross daily. Paul said in I Cor. 15:31, "I die daily." We are counseled in Heb. 3:13 to "exhort one another daily." Each day we are to renew our courage and decision and conflict against the power of the enemy.

In Psalm 118:24 is a statement which we can apply to this thought of daily, consistent godliness. It says, "This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it." Each day we can count as a special gift from our heavenly Father to us. It is a new opportunity and chance to live for Him and enjoy His presence. Paul said in Ephesians 5:15-16, "See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil." Again, in Col. 4:5, he says, "Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time." Now the Greek expression translated, "redeeming the time" is: "Buying up the opportunity." It is taking advantage of the space, chance and time for worthwhile and profitable endeavor. We are going to give an account of how we have employed and used the days and space of time God has given.

There comes to my heart a vision of the "Gates of day." As the hours of night give place to the rays of the rising sun there should be a preparation going on in our hearts. We are facing a new day. We are at the brink of another extension of Godıs mercy. He could have destroyed the world long ago, but in Christ He ushered in an age of mercy. He is holding back the clouds of destruction that will one day envelope this world and cause it to pass away forever. Day after day He tarries in the heavens, giving us more chance and opportunity. We are facing the new day that is coming on. We are at the gates of day. Soon they will open up for us. What are we to do in preparation for the new day that is coming on?

The song says, "Prayer is the key on the bending knee to open the mornıs first hours." How needful it is for us to be on our knees at the gates of day! As the day looks forth, as the hour approaches when you will be ushered out into the main stream of the traffic of this world, how vital that you spend time in prayer to our heavenly Father! Our faith must be renewed, our consecration and submission refined, and our decision and determination strengthened! We must make contact with heaven at the gates of day! He has promised grace for this day, but are we really applying ourselves and putting in for it? Let us rise from our beds of slumber and train ourselves to tarry in prayer before the Lord! Many hasten out of a morning with no preparation at the gates of day! This may be your day to leave this world. This could be the day God will choose to answer some weighty burdens that you have held before Him! Are you prepared for it? Bow down, O fleeting mortal, at the gates of day. This day that is coming on can be a great blessing or it can be a curse. Which will it be? Oh, let us greet the dawn with prayer, thanksgiving, submission, worship, supplication, faith, hope, cheer, expectancy and a bright outlook!

An Insight On Discipleship

Bro. Paul Sorrell

When we witness the Holy Spirit’s anointing, it is both inspiring and edifying, whether in singing, exhorting, teaching, preaching or any other public ministry. However, it is important for us to realize that successful ministry is far more than public expression.

Let’s consider one special area of importance of discipleship–mentoring or instilling in others the values and foundation which enables them to accomplish the same as the one who converted them.

Jesus is the best example of discipleship. He looked ahead, recognizing the responsibilities His disciples would have as apostles. He prepared them through His personal influence and through time with them. As a result, they were better able to endure as He did.

No man spoke as He spoke in offering the words of eternal life, and yet He prophesied that His disciples would do "greater works than these." (John 14:12.) They certainly have, by taking His message to all the world. No other ministry has reached so many, nor accomplished so much. What is the key? No question about it–discipleship!

Take a moment and observe one testing time of the first apostles. In Acts 12:1-5, the church was under pressure. James had been martyred, and Peter was in prison. Remember, as disciples they were taught to pray. They were to pray "without ceasing." But how and what for? Notice the scripture doesn’t say, "prayed for Peter to get out of prison." It says, they "prayed for him" (Peter), which is a vision higher than release from prison. Their mentor had instilled in them, "Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." Matthew 26:41. Peter had failed on previous testing. Now they are "praying without ceasing unto God" that Peter’s faith would not fail. It didn’t, and he was also delivered out of prison. Hallelujah!

Another disciple, John, said of his personal discipleship, "We have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our own hands have handled,... (For the life was manifested and we have seen it,...)" I John 1:1-2.

What persuaded John to follow Christ’s steps? The "life of the Father" which was also in Christ’s personal life. It is true of any successful discipleship.

Timothy’s mother and grandmother discipled well. (II Timothy 1:5.) The apostle Paul said of Timothy, "I have no man like minded, who will naturally care for your state. For all seek their own." Philippians 2:20-21. His mentors had successfully instilled unselfishness in this young disciple. How important!

Elijah was a man of God. However, he suffered periods of great depression. He even ran from Jezebel. (I Kings 19:2-3.) His disciple, Elisha, asked for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit. Evidently the strength of Elijah’s spirit convinced him of where the source of victory was to be found.

We have no record of Elisha complaining, fleeing from enemies or losing courage. Even in death, Elisha seemed full of power. So Elijah’s greatest success was his successor, Elisha, who was used of God to do more miracles than his mentor.

May all who are involved in genuine ministry recognize the importance of discipleship, instilling in their followers the fear of God, and acknowledging the Holy Spirit. Amen.

God's Truth

Grace McMi

In John 8:31-32, Jesus said to those Jews who believed on Him, "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed. And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

The definition of truth is to be free from deceit, to be accurate and exact, to be perfectly straight and level, and to be error-free.

Psa. 33:4 tells us, "For the word of the Lord is right; and all his works are done in truth." Jesus, during His prayer to His Father in John 17:17, said, "Thy word is truth." It is important to establish in our minds and hearts the foundation that God is a God of truth and cannot lie. (Titus 1:2.)

It has always been important to serve God acceptably, in truth. Since we have to deal with unprecedented numbers of religions, theologies, sects, cults and creeds in today’s world, I believe the most important thing in our lives is our understanding of God’s truth.

Only the truth can make us free. Anything less than God’s truth will not bring spiritual deliverance. Anything more than God’s truth brings spiritual bondage. Both step outside the definition of God’s truth and bring with them the curses mentioned in Rev. 22:18-19. God’s Word is eternal, perfect and unchanging and cannot be improved upon. II Pet. 1:3 says that "… his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue."

God did not leave out anything important to our spiritual welfare. If it’s not in there, beware of those who teach it as truth. Jesus said everything He meant to say. He said it just how He wanted to say it, and He made no mistakes in the presentation of the gospel. It is important for us to accept and believe that as the very foundation and cornerstone of our faith.

There are many presentations of truth in the world today, and many define certain teachings as God’s truth. The importance of God’s truth cannot be overstated and is frequently wrongly defined. I am persuaded that if we are truly seeking for God’s truth, we’re going to have to get it directly from God’s Word. God’s truth does not adjust itself for anyone. If we hope to make heaven our home, we must adjust ourselves, by God’s grace, to measure to the standard of truth as presented in the Bible. The Scripture says we can "know the truth." In John 14:6, Jesus says, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." The thing for me to do, then, in my earnest study of knowing God’s truth, is to apply myself to the study of the teachings of Christ and His presentation of the gospel.

These scriptures teach us several divine principles. First of all, truth is not defined by man or a counsel of men. Christ is the truth. That definition is eternal and carries with it the unchanging power of God. Men cannot redefine Him and expect to keep the power of God in their midst. For someone to define something other than Christ or His Word as truth, is to step outside the Biblical definition. Remember, anything presented as truth that is not contained within Biblical boundaries, brings spiritual bondage in one form or another.

The only way to the Father is through Christ. Any "way" other than Christ Himself will not lead to the Father, regardless of who teaches it or what they call themselves. The true people of God, including His ministers, always point to Christ. Beware of anyone who will point to any foundation other than that already laid in the Bible with chapter and verse. Beware of those who will add to the truth, or take away from it. Their words carry with them deception and spiritual bondage that may not be apparent at first, but will surely lead to destruction in the end.

I appreciate very much the teachings of those who have gone before us and regard highly their contribution to the knowledge we have of Biblical truth. I appreciate Bro. D. S. Warner and esteem what he meant to the history of the Church of God. However, in my pursuit of God’s truth, it is important for me to realize that neither he nor any other person should be elevated as a substitute for Christ, the only Lawgiver of the Church (James 4:12). We are to build only upon His Word.

Remember, only the truth can set men free. Anything outside of God’s truth, then, will bind and bring into captivity in a way that God never intended. God’s approval is not earned by the teachings and doctrines of men, nor do such things set men free.

The Church of God, by Biblical definition, is founded on God’s truth. Her walls are truth. She is the pillar and ground of the truth. To step outside the safety that lies within the teaching of truth, is to step outside the Biblical definition and to cease being the Church.

If a man or a body of people, who once abode by the truth of God’s Word, and who once measured to the Biblical definition of the purity of the name Church of God, steps outside that definition and begins to teach as truth the doctrines and traditions of men not solidly founded on the Bible, that movement also steps outside the protection and power found within these Biblical parameters. It becomes a sect, regardless of the name by which it is called, regardless, even, of the appearance of godliness. I learn from this the importance of teaching only God’s truth.

The heart of man is not a safe guide. It will not lead you into all truth. Jer. 10:23, tells us that "… the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps." Prov. 21:2 teaches an eternal truth with these words: "Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the Lord pondereth the hearts."

To trust to our hearts, or to our own wisdom, or to our perception of anything other than the foundational Word of God, is a risk that may lead us into error. My way and my opinion will always be right in my own eyes, but even my conscience cannot be an absolute guide, for it has been formed by so many things: upbringing, life experiences, etc. However, God’s truth is absolutely unchanging. It wasn’t formed by anything other than God. If I say, "The Lord is leading me in this way," even with all sincerity and spiritual desire, if there is no scripture, the risk is there that I am deceiving myself. The root of man’s wisdom will always be carnal and fleshly, even with the appearance of deep spirituality and godliness.

The Scripture teaches us that the Holy Spirit is sent to guide and lead us into all truth, and it is also true that He reserves to Himself the right to point out anything in our individual lives and to require of us things that He may not require of others. However, if well-meaning people attempt to place those individual leadings on an entire congregation or group of people, and begin to define and label those individual leadings as truth without scriptural reference, those people, however well-meaning and sincere, step outside the Biblical definition of truth.

Jesus defined the truth as Himself. The Holy Spirit works within the parameters of the truth as defined by Jesus. Christ said the only way to the Father was through Him. These statements are eternal. To change them in any way is to damage the free course of truth and bring about a spiritual slavery to the doctrines of men. The truth sets men free; it does not enslave them to anything not required by God’s Word.

Where there is no Word of God to back up a teaching, regardless of name, or past glory, or present reputation, the risk is too great of stepping outside the truth of God’s Word. Any time a man or a group of people do such a thing, they make of themselves a sect. The Word of God can be used without the aid of the Holy Spirit and it becomes then "the dead letter, which killeth." The Spirit of God cannot and does not work outside the parameters of the Word of God. To say that the Holy Spirit is leading a man or a group into something that cannot be proven by chapter and verse is to fall into great danger of sectarianism. The beauty of the Biblically defined Church of God is that she stands free from the creeds and doctrines of men, written or unwritten, and finds glorious freedom in the pure, untainted, inspired Word of God, delivered under the anointing of the Holy Spirit. The true people of God will not require as tests of fellowship anything God does not require in His Word.

It is not rebellion for people to insist on the truth of God’s Word, unmixed with human wisdom, to be preached from the pulpits of the Church of God. It is not rebellion to ask questions about truth. The truth needs no defense and graciously undergoes thorough investigation, coming through with flying colors every time. The truth can be known by every man, woman, boy or girl who wishes to measure to the Word of God.

Truth is something we do not always find comfortable. It may be something we do not wish to face. When I study Christ’s words, I find in them eternal, powerful, unchanging truth. Sometimes facing the truth about ourselves is painful. Sometimes it is encouraging. Sometimes it is challenging — but I find comfort in the fact that, never-the-less, it is truth. A heart seeking truth will be satisfied only with truth, regardless of personal consequence.

Proverbs 23:23 instructs us to, "Buy the truth, and sell it not;..." The truth of God’s Word can only be possessed at the cost of everything else. God’s truth does not cohabit with deceit. If we wish to buy the truth, we must purchase it with everything we have, even our own "ways."

Buy the truth. Don’t sell it for any reason. Don’t trade it in for leadership position. Don’t trade it in for the approval of men. Don’t trade it in for unscriptural traditions or opinions or good will. Don’t trade it, even, for the appearance of godliness but denying the power thereof. Don’t trade it in for the fellowship of those who would bring into bondage truth-seeking hearts. Buy the truth. Sell it not.

We can know the truth. There will always be those who say, "I have the leadings of the Holy Spirit and I wish to teach you…." But if those teachings are not solidly founded on the eternal Word of God, it is not rebellion to question that. Human endeavors will never replace the truth. Human understanding cannot plummet its depth. Human wisdom falls short of God’s will every time and will bring into captivity your spiritual well being, regardless of the sacrifice required.

It is truth alone that sets men free, and that truth is defined in the Word of God as Christ Himself. He cannot be redefined. Christ is the foundation of the Church of God. Christ is the only Lawgiver of the Church, and His laws have been complete for hundreds of years now. Only He, by His eternal, unchanging Word, metes out truth.

Coming face to face with the truth as it applies to our lives, freely confessing our need and hunger for it, and adjusting every facet of our spirits to accept it, will set us free spiritually. It will bring us into contact with all the graces and power of Christ and the fruit of His Spirit. This, then, is the only way to achieve that deep spiritual growth for which true children of God hunger and thirst.

"Buy the truth, and sell it not."

OK–Greetings to all the saints: I want to thank the Lord and all the saints, for your prayers for us the past few months. God has been so good to us as I had a very difficult pregnancy. He helped me as I was on bedrest emotionally, physically and spiritually. He gave me the song, "What A Mighty God We Serve" the night before I went into labor, and continued to bring that song to my mind during Corey’s birth. He was born 8 weeks early, and had to stay in Intensive Care for 18 days, but only to get strong enough to be able to eat by mouth. He never had any oxygen or ventilation, which is extremely common for boy babies born that early. Praise God!! He is so good!!

After we had Corey there was a dove outside our hospital window that stayed for four hours. We feel God was reassuring us that Corey would be okay.

Continue to pray for our family to grow in the Lord. We are in troubled times, but we know God will help us no matter what happens.

–Debbie Shaffer

OK–Dear Bro. Wayne: Greetings in the lovely and mighty name of Jesus our Lord. I am glad that we have hope in Him.

The Scripture says His kingdom ruleth over all and that He hath prepared His throne in the heavens. (Psalm 103:19.)

It was so sad about the four airplanes which crashed, leaving so many dead and injured. There was so much loss in many ways. I hope more people will put their hope and trust in God....

Your brother in Christ, –T. V. McMillian

KS–Dear Bro. Wayne Murphey: Just a few comments on the literature that is being sent out by Faith Publishing House. I cannot express my thanks enough for the spiritual food I have found in letters and publications. That includes the beautiful poem in the Bible Lesson book for this quarter. The poem was not only beautiful but it was so expressive.

May God bless each one in a very special way.

In His love, –Naomi Dickerson Hiebert

NY–To whom it may concern: I am requesting quite a few tracts from you on the lines of salvation. About nineteen years ago I made a large order from you. Many of us here are greatly burdened in light of the recent World Trade Center tragedy. We believe God is doing something here in New York, sort of shaking and waking up, seeing the end is so near.

Our burden is for lost souls. I am a courier for FedEx and had just started my delivery route here in New York when the jets hit. I saw a number of people at a business meeting watching the TV. When I went to look, I saw both towers on fire. My first thought was, "How are they going to put out that fire, seeing all those souls are in there?" I considered all the thousands of never-dying souls in those buildings. I couldn’t stop crying as I desperately pleaded with God to spare souls.

Now there are countless people asking questions such as, "Why?" Many of our brethren work in New York City, so we see an opportunity. Every one of the tracts I am ordering I have read and have found to be quite excellent....

In Christ’s service, –Bro. Phil Salisbury

OK–Dear ones: I am sending some addresses for the Faith and Victory paper to be sent to the following....

Thank you for sending the Faith and Victory to me. I get so much good out of it.

I am still praising the Lord for His wondrous goodness to me. I think about the verse in Matthew 6:8, "...for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him." "While they are yet speaking, I will hear." Isaiah 65:24 is another of my favorite verses.

I hope you are all doing well.

With much love,

–Susanna Penner and Earl Russell

OK–Like millions of fellow Americans, I felt stunned and numb as we watched the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City collapse to the ground after each received a hit from hijacked American jets. The blow to the Pentagon in Washington, D. C. compounded the shock, and overwhelming grief set in when we heard about the fourth jetliner crash in Pennsylvania.

Several questions bombarded my mind and other citizens voiced the same concern. Who could be so angry at our nation? Why? How could anyone be so heartlessly cruel to themselves and others? Which method should we use to prevent more attacks? What will happen to our national security and economy?

Panic kicked in and the first personal fear was the shortage of fuel. Like hundreds of other Americans, I rushed to a gas station, waited in a long line, and filled up my car’s gas tank. Then I thought I should hurry to the grocery store and stock up before the shelves became empty like the gas pumps were depleted.

As I turned my car into the grocery store parking lot, the Lord spoke to me, "I am your salvation, high tower, refuge and your Savior; be not afraid." I drove out of the parking lot and went home.

I needed comfort and God’s Word had it for me. Here is what the Lord gave me: "The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence. I will call on the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. When the waves of death compassed me, the floods of ungodly men made me afraid. In my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried to my God: and he did hear my voice..."

II Samuel 22:2-5, 7.

To the people of God, the Lord is our salvation and we trust in Him, our High Tower. The monetary gain of this world fluctuates up and down but the Lord is a steady rock we can build upon.

Jesus told us that He even cares about the sparrow and the lilies of the field–why be anxious about tomorrow? (Matthew 6:24-34.) The human part of us wonders and reacts, but our spirit knows that God is out there in the future, ready to help us in time of need like He has been there in the past. If we keep His commandments and build upon our Rock, Jesus Christ, we will not collapse emotionally when the enemy attacks our territory.

From India...

Sept. 12, 2001–Dear Bro. Wayne Murphey and dear saints in America and in other nations: Greetings to you all dear ones again in the precious name of Jesus.

We are almost paralyzed to hear of the heart-aching news of the tragedies in New York and the surrounding places in America. Terrorists took away the lives of thousands of innocent people. Really, this incident is a shock to the whole world because the whole world is going to suffer from its consequences. We send our heartfelt sympathy and condolence to the bereaved families in America. (Troubles and explosions are everywhere. This is not our resting place. When Jacob saw the change in the countenance of Laban, he packed and got ready to go to Bethel. The countenance of this world is changing. Let us pack and get ready to go. Our prayers are for you dear ones in America.)

Our youth campmeeting at Chalakudy ended with many blessings and victories. Congregations are going on fine.

Yours in Him, –Bro. John Varghese

Sept. 7, 2001–Dear Bro. Wayne: Love and greetings in Jesus’ dear name from me to you. I want to thank God for the privilege given to us to be called His children through the gracious work of Christ on our behalf. I am delighted to be a member of God’s family and a joint-heir with Christ Jesus. Glory be to His name.

The work in Asana is progressing. Like I always said, the field is ripe for harvest but the labourers are very few. I know the Lord of the harvest will continue to send labourers to His vineyard. We need prayers for the work. For now, I really thank God for His end-time move in Nigeria as a whole. I personally need prayers for myself and my wife. We have not been very strong in the body for the past two weeks. Remember my business in prayer also.

This year’s annual convention in Asana is set for December 19–23, 2001. We are still praying and expecting somebody from America to join us in that convention. Just as it was last year, I believe God will move again in a wonderful way this year. Continue to pray for that program. We are praying and working towards it. I know God will help us with victory.

The brethren here are fine. I am always in touch with the saints in Port Harcourt through letters. I know they are fine.

Please share my love with all the saints in the Print Shop and remember to be heaven compliant all the time.

Yours in His service.

Sept. 12, 2001–Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. Psalms 2:1-6.

We send salutations to our brethren in the Lord in this time of sore vexations in our world. May we all take courage and give courage in the fight against the principalities and powers that have been turned loose.

We had a good meeting here from August 17-22. A tent meeting was held on a community plot in the suburb, "Seventeenth of April." Before we set up the tent a prayer chain was formed and people in the neighborhood were visited and invited to services.

Bro. James and Sis. Patricia Bell, from OK, the Philip Matthew’s family and some young people from Pacoima, CA, came. We thank the Lord for their help. Bro. Bell brought several messages on Christian living and being examples to our children. There was good attendance and several went to the altar.

A baptismal service was held Saturday, September 8, at a river in San Carlos valley. Bro. Mario, a couple from "Seventeen," Bro. Juan and Sis. Lorena, and Sis. Christina were baptized. After the baptism we had a time of fellowship and food.

In the week of September 11-14, Bro. Mario and myself helped reconstruct Sis. Heidi Haydee’s house. Heidi got saved and baptized last year. She lives alone with her two children. Brothers Juan, Pablo and Mario put on a new roof and poured a cement floor in one room.

We need special prayer for 11 year old Viviana. Last winter Viviana was diagnosed with a brain tumor. She was shown on TV and money was collected to take her to San Diego for an operation. She was bedfast when her family called for prayer. God raised her up enough to walk to the chapel to be in service which was her heart’s desire before leaving for San Diego. The X-rays taken in San Diego showed no tumor. God continued healing until her bodily functions were normal, and she attended school in San Diego for three months. Then she fell sick again and was operated on in the Loma Linda Hospital in California. After several months of medical treatments the parents were told there was little or nothing more that could be done for Viviana. She was brought back to her Grandmother in the suburb "Seventeenth of April." Again we were called for prayer. We and her Grandmother believe God brought her back for His glory. Our request is that those who believe God heals cancer will join with us in prayer for Viviana.

Please pray that the brethren here will be united in love and stay encouraged. Last Sunday night’s service was encouraging because the house was full. Some were there who had not come since before camp meeting.

Several brethren don’t have steady jobs. Please pray that God will manifest Himself as they humble themselves and trust in Him.

Sept. 22, 2001–Dear Bro. and Sis. Murphey: Greetings to each one of you in the name of Jesus. I hope you are all fine in the arms of our Lord. May the Lord bless the workers in the Print Shop and find joy in their wonderful service to the printing ministry.

Signs indicate that we are living in the end times. Imagine how rewarding it will be at the judgement, when we find out how the Lord was able to use our humble efforts to impact and to change people’s lives for all eternity. May you have joy in your hearts for your work in His kingdom and bless your efforts….

We heard about the attack of terrorists to the World Trade Center in New York and the danger of war to Arab countries. Are there any saints that were affected by the tragedy of that Trade Center? We heard that there were Filipino casualties.

The end is surely coming nearer and we must focus our attention to save souls before it is too late.

Your brother in Christ,

–Matias S. Tangunan

The terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentegon was staggering. Such was the magnitude of the event that it turned the minds and hearts of many toward pondering the age in which we live and questioning "why?" It even created conflict among Christiandom, where attempts to answer that question generated controversy.

I refer to the comments of a well-known evangelist who partially laid blame for the attacks at the doorstep of liberal civil-rights groups, homosexuals and abortion-rights supporters. He later apologized for his comments.

How do you think Christ would have viewed events were He in our situation? Similiar circumstances in His time on earth offer insight and comparison.

In Luke 13:1, Jesus was informed of an atrocity inflicted on some Galileans by Pilate. Not much is known about this incident, but history records that the Galileans were a seditious people. Evidently they were brutally killed while in the process of offering sacrifices in Jerusalem. Jesus knew the minds of those who related to Him the news, and He understood that some were thinking the Galileans were killed because of their sinful practices. His response was "Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things?"

Jesus then referred to the time when a tower in Siloam fell upon 18 people, killing them. He stated that the victims were no worse than other sinners.

Jesus’ attitude was one of compassion, realizing people needed mercy and healing in their souls.

He once told His disciples, "Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves." Matt. 10:16. Christians should be wise to perceive and discern societal evil, but our attitude toward others should be harmless. We should possess enough compassion in our hearts to help even the most depraved souls we encounter without allowing a self-righteous attitude to get in the way.

In troubled times, people need a shepherd to calm their fears, lead them in green pastures and beside calm waters. Let us do what we can to share the love and peace of Christ with those about us.

Isn’t it amazing how many personal links are related to the World Trade Center tragedy? Every once in awhile we hear of someone we know who knew of someone else who was in the Trade Center on Sept. 11, or perhaps who just escaped it.

Links are amazing things. In connection with that, I think of how the Gospel can be a link which extends far beyond our knowledge. You never know when you can be a help to someone who in turn will be a blessing to someone else.

Souls are perishing every day, and any connection which we can be a part of to save someone who is close to eternity, is well worth the endeavor.

It is our desire to renew our efforts in reaching out to others with the gospel. And we want to take this opportunity to thank all who enable us to accomplish this. In the last several weeks we have printed, as well as mailed, thousands of tracts and books. The support you send to help achieve this is your link to saving souls. May God bless you for your sacrifices.
