NINE REASONS FOR TOTAL ABSTINENCE
BECAUSE it is the best thing for health. Any creditable physician will tell you that drinking of alcoholic liquor is harmful to the individual. Alcohol is a poison. It is a habit-forming, irritant, narcotic, depressant drug. Its habitual use helps no one. Everyone wants good health.
BECAUSE it is best for mental efficiency. Only men and women with clear minds can hope to succeed today. Sufficient experimental work has been done in Europe and America by eminent scientists to prove that alchohol, even in small quantities, retards mental activity. It destroys balanced thinking. The mind alert is the mind that leads.
BECAUSE it makes for physical efficiency. This is a machine age. The dema~nd is for physical strength to keep pace with mechanical speed. Next to menta! alertness there must be physical iitness. The attitude of railroads, large industrial corporations and employers everywhere has been influenced by scientifically determined facts concerning the harmful efferts of alcohol in the individual.
BECAUSE it means economic succes~. Money spent on strong drink is worse than wasted. The man who drinks is not alert, nor trustworthy, and these are necessary for climbing in the business world.
BECAUSE it means safer living. The drinking driver is a menace to everyone including himself. And the drinking pedestrian is never beyond danger. Every one of us must see that he does not endanger the lives of others. Suppose any of the following drank, how safe would we be‹policeman, fireman, bus driver. train engineer, wireless operator, and captain and officers of ships at sea? Are we above any of these, or do we have some responsibility to our own group?
BECAUSE it makes for self-respect. Drinking is neither "correct" nor "perfectly proper." It is largely ignorant or willfully selfish. There is nothing to boas~ of in being a crowd follower. And because the "crowd" does a thing, does not make it right. Self-respect is more to be desired than much applause. Respect yourself. Others will then respect you.
BECAUSE of association. Even those who drink moderately are degraded and held in contempt‹classed with the drunkard for the sake of an occasional drink.
BECAUSE you are a steward of your life. Your body is not yours. It has been loaned to you. It rightfully belongs to God. It is to be used for Him. Its value and God's ownership mustn't be forgotten.
BECAUSE "Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging; and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise." Prov. 20:1.
